Chapter 6 Cable & Its Advances

Ciara Adams
Chapter6
Cable :A Wired Versus Wireless World
At one point and time there was no such thing as cable.I believe there was only maybe five major stations that were viewed before cable came into play. Most of the T.V stations centered around daily, and national news.Television has undergone a wired vs. Wireless world, as time has progressed.

In 1940’s cable T.V was the “big advance” for many Americans. In the 1940’s the first cable systems were called CATV, another name for this system is Community antenna televison. In time HBO,and  TBS severed as satellite channels. The whole idea of satellite T.V came from a man by the name of Arthur Clarke.Clarke invisioned “a nework of communication satellites”.After the advance of satellite television, came Tekstar, the first communication satellite that relays telephone and televison signals in 1960.Now, in th year 2010.......If someone were to ask you to make a list of the your Top five networks and Top five channels to watch, for some it may be quiet difficult jugding from the wide variety of  television stations and networks our country has.It may be even virtually impossible for many more because some are trained into viewing T.V on the daily basis. The Wireless World along with satellite technology has changed the television industry for the better. Our technological world always seems to advance  in ways that benefit our society. There always seems as though there can bee a quicker, easier, and safer way to go about changing the way things previously were in our past routines.
The ficanial factor of the on going process of “ The Wireless World”, is that even when one may think to themselves  “I don’t think I can afford cable”,there seems to be a price range, or cable package to were each citizen has an equal opportunity to viewing the same shows as an individual who has a more wider selection to choose from. Our advances may change but, equal opportunity will always remind the same.

Chapter 5 T.V & The Power of Visual Culture

CHAPTER 5
T.V. & THE POWER OF VISUAL CULTURE
When comparing the internet to T.V its “food for thought” in a sense.Digtial Technology also changes “How we watch T.V.”Our future of television is important to those in the U.S, who are strong viewers of T.V. Telelvision is also the main storytelling medium of our time.
Television can be an assest to the society as well as expressing negative effects to its viewers. When it comes to children, usually kids between the ages 2-13, mimic what is seen on T.V is
usually the negative, and violent behavior such as wrestling, extreme fights, or even a slap to the face, can be threathing to some viewers, and even more a henderence to the learning process for children. As a child grows older, it is then, that they have atleast maturaed to the point to understant  the difference between what can be done on T.V but not done in school, or at home.
As a college student I am able to utilize the modern technology of either a desktop computer or laptop and can make the decision of either watching  a channel over the internet, or from thr privacy of my livingroom, But, now the idea in question is Can or will the internet replace Television? And What will become of the T.V.vs. Computers, or laptop in thr next 10-30 years?
Personally I am not too much of an Television viewer.I don’t have cable in my home at the moment and I do realize how important  and how much of an issue these questions will become over the years.I believe movie theathres will eventually go out of bissness.I feel American citizens will make their livingrooms into their own personal movie theathre.I also think T.V will be touchscreen, and also have a webcam attached to the outer screen of the T.V.I also think people will be able to use their T.V as a way to call family members and friends, while at the same time visually see the person your talking to.Another one of my visions is the company Apple just might  be a cable provider. There may not  be censorship anymore.Through new advances to our “media world” over the years theres no telling what may be instored for the citizens of America. As menetioned earler this subject matter is defiantly food for thought.

Chapter 4 Radio & Origins of Broadcasting

Chapter 4
Radio & Origins of Broadcasting

The public Intrest, truly matters in our society, and also in the “media world.”The radio was and still is a constant in the daily lives of many citizens in America.Radio is in a way the begining of how communicational media begun to spread.I feel radio will be around for a while, since there have been so many other new advances within our “techinlogical relm”, and radio still stands today. It is appiled in the automobiles we drive, it is apllied in our homes, through being played over the radio from stero players, sd players, mp3 players, and even the internet.Radio is still up rising along with newer furture inventions. The radio  is “staying the pace” in a sense.
There are many people, who have to listen to the radio each day before they begin their daily rountine scheldules.Personally I don’t enjoy listening to the radio, when there is mostly talk.I’m not a fan  to listening to the same voice over the radio for 15- 20 mins non-stop.For me, in the morning hours radio isn’t being listened to.Having direct advertising over the radio isn’t pleasing to all people of America.
There can be positive and negitive assests to radio, if you prefer a certain genre of music you can go to, a particular radio station and hear only what you want to.The listener is in control or has the power to  listen to there favorite radio station. What’s really unique about radio stations is that an ordinary citizen can request a particular song and if the radio station empolyee recieves the call then the listeners song choice will be played.Another great oppprtunity with radio  stations is that, some radio stations have a ticket giveaway process, that involves a radio listener of their particular station  to  call in if they know the Top seven or five songs for the day or the hour depending on the radio station your listening to, and if your the correct listener then you will win the ticket giveaway. These ticket prizes consist of either a concert tickets of maybe a popular band or recording artist, or just community events in the regionor city of the station.
As a strong listener to the radio, I take advantage of the different opportunities the radio stations set forth on the weekly basis.Iam glad to bbe able to select for the “pool” I should say of stations.Inthe state of NewYorkm there is a widespread, diversity among radio stations and the music genere being set forth to the listeners ears.

Chapter 3 Sound Recording& Popular Music

Chapter3 Sound Recording & Popular Music

There are many lovers of music in our society. For some music plays a significant role in thr lives of many Americans young and old.Within the history  of American sound recording came many different genres of music from pop music, rock music, Folk , Psychedelic, punk, hiphop, and R&B.According To Robbie Robertson of  The Band “Music should never be harmless.Personally I agree, but many may disagree.Sometimes song artisst intend on getting a particular message across and , some artists wants their message to get sent out to its listeners. But, because they want to sway their listerners towards maybe rebels which can be bad, it may have a negative effects on listeners as well, which may cause the influence off drug and alchol. There may even be dangerous drug use among band memebers  of particular musical bands.
As a listener of music and being  that I am open minded with all genres of music, I have observed that there are many sterotypes within the music business.I also feel as though their are postive sides to why artist may choose to write, or sing a particular song. Some postive reasons why artist may compose a certain song type may be because, the artist can use their song as a way of speaking out.It can also be a New change, or way of release, or escape. The music they produce, can be pleasurable or entertaining. It also gives youth in our present society a “voice”.Foe example when poverty was very prominat in the city of NewYork, the artist Grabdmaster Flash, rapped a song “Don’t Push Me”.This song to my understanding was written to get the message of the growing provtery levels, and community environments of those who were suffering, nad unable to make a healthly  life fo rthemselves in NYC.When is video/song was compared to a more present day rapper Jay-Z, his version of the“American Dream”, was displayed on the music video “NewYork. Ft. Alicia Keys” showed its auidence that it is possible to rise above proverty levels and make use to talents within.Once those talents are found within they can be ulitlzed  and then brought out unto the public eyes, and heard through music to entertain the public’s interest. It may  not reach all individuals, but someone is sure to be touched by hte words spoken from artist with unique messages.
A song, is basically telling a story.Whatever its writer wants to embark on is their particular choice. The business deal along with sound recording different types of music can be a learning experience for anyone who is new to the  business aspect of the “ music world”.Personally I feel if your music is good enough for atleast one indivdual in the world, then “go for it”.
