Chapter 16 Expression of Speech

There are four models of  expression and speech. The four models are: Authoritarian, communist, social responsibility, and Libertarian. Our current model that the U.S uses is social responsibility meaning it follows the watchdog theory of things. Its our our soical responsobility as a counrtry to allow what we feel through democracy to occur in the U.S.

There has been this debate over weather or not their should be Net Neutrality allowed in the United States. For the democracts, they feel it should be allowed, while many republicnas strongly disagree. The republican party feels that one of the main reasons why we don't follow "Net Neutrality" rules is beacuse as along as it doesn;t exist in America, the more money the government will contiune to make. For the republicans in our country, they want to keep the steady process of money always accessable for our government. The democrates feel fairness is the right way to go.Net Neutraility, basiclly keeps all search website engines all at a netural, burt contast speed, where no one site may override another.

For example, the search engine Google, will be able to come on as the same speed as Time Warner website.Having this website fairness available to all citzens of America would be a great advanacement for out country.I personally feel it will bring "us" together as a stronger nation, as far as in the modern technology aspect of things.Since it will be at each and everyones fingertips, its making it easier and less stressful of having to wait for the site to appear on the computer screen.

I enjoy being able to have the opportunity of being apart of this debate, because I am currently a college student who is learning while at the same time living in "this" moment of things.I will look back on these days and be able to remember these wonderful, and historic times in a sense.I also enjoy being able to have the freedom of speech and all the other magnificant amendments that all circle around "our" rights as America citizens. Not every country in the world can say that.In America we have our freedoms and rights and I take heed to them.I must say that I truly am  a grateful individual. When I watch the television and listen to the radio of all the international news that is currently taking place in the world, I consider myself blessed.America is amazing, "we  are giving tredmous opportuntites, and the chance to persue all of our aspirations and dreams. My expression of speech is served and will continue to be completed with pride.

Chapter 10 Books

Chapert 10      books

Books first began on Papyrus paper then produced into rolled scrolls around 2400 B.C.E.Books can be informal, educational, and a fun past time to read for those individual who enjoy reading. Our present generation of youth very seldom   picks up a book and read. The only way our young people will read is if they are told to do so from either a professor, or if they have an eager interest in reading a certain genre in particular.
Reading books can be fundamental. The more one reads the more they will know. The more one knows the more they will grasp writing skills and utilize their skills in times that are appropriated for writing. One fact about writing I know to be true is that, you can’t believe everything you read or see pictured in books. It’s always good to know at least some background about an author of a book you find yourself interested in. Knowing an author’s background will be a great explanation for some of the content you find throughout your reading.
It seems as if when I was in elementary and grammar school, I read unknowly.I knew the words and eventually learned the definitions of words as I grew even older. Even now, I’m still learning more words and definitions daily. It doesn’t hurt to learn how to understand the meaning to words. Words are everywhere and having a true comprehension of words is one of the most important abilities one can have inside them. My youngest brother Joshua was very late with developing speech and reading skills. My mother sent him to the Buffalo Hearing and Speech school for children with this disability such as his. The teacher really took out the time to understand and listen to my brother. There was this one specific teacher Josh had who would come to our home 2 days out of the week to work with him .I would also sit down stairs with them and try to assist my brother in any way I could. I must say that his speech teacher would always show forth patientence and had the willingness to serve in any way she could.Im thankful for her. I wanted to show how important reading is and how important it is especially for are young people do more of because our youth of today will pave the wave for their future generations to come.

Chapter 9 Magazines

Ch 9 MAGZINES
There is a broad spectrum to choose from when deciding on what magazine interest Americans. Depending on the age of an individual a magazine such as Seventeen would be for the teenager and or young adult while The National Geographic would be keyed in the interest of a much wiser and experienced adult. I feel magazines were putting place for leisure. There are sports entertainments, Hollywood, cooking, men’s and            Women’s health, Times, etc…
In each magazine that exists in America, in some way an advertisement is depicted for the reader to view, because even though the reader is viewing the magazine, money must continue to produce, so many more magazine can be published and continue to produce, so more magazines can published and continue to be at arm’s reach of the people who find one particular magazine interesting
Some of the same articles or subject matter that are in magazines, will also occur  or be found on T.V.Now it has also gotten to a point where magazines such  LIFE, no longer can be purchased, its only online, so instead of having to spend your money on a physical magazine, it only takes a click of               a mouse.
Sometimes magazines put an ideal image that women and men should be lean, fit, beautiful body machines. In the real world not everyone can fit into size 0 jeans, or an extra small blouse. What matters the most is what an individual thinks of themselves. The more one puts positive thoughts  into  their heads, and begin to accept themselves they won’t; be bothered or affected when viewing a size  2 female walking down a runway at  a fashion show in Paris.

Chapter 8 Newspapers

Chapter 8  Newspapers

In the world of Media, our technology has been evolving and still is evolving. For some reason, there are only a handful of people who still purchase newspapers, and carry them along on their daily routine schedules. American newspapers area facing challenges now, and towards the future, the Newspaper industry may be facing even more struggles to complete in the media alert to the public.

Modern journalism began with radio news, then T.V.Now instead of picking up a newspaper, there are U.S News Magazines, the internet to view news T.V to view the news. Mainly elderly adults who has been around for a awhile tend to spend the .75 cent Monday-Saturday, and $2.00 on Sunday. I believe because back as young adults reading the newspaper was all they had to hold on to. If it couldn’t be watched on T.V. then, on the go in the morning reading the newspaper was there and still is here for reason.
For some, they feel having to read the newspaper is too time consuming their so caught up in either themselves, family problems, or their daily occupation. As the newspaper struggles, I honestly feel the newspapers will still be around in the country of America for the next 20-30 years, because I f can be kept as a family keepsake, and oral tradition would be able to occur throughout a family’s future generation.

Movies and the Impact of Images

Ciara Adams

Ch. 7 “Movies and the impact of Images”

Movies can be formatted into all different types of genre. There are horror, comedy, documentary, and romance. These narrative catagories, can Range from millions to billions of dollars earned in box office. Each person who has ever watched a move, watches that movie, because they may feel, since they seen a preview of the film, something that was seen during the preview mat have caught their eye. The interest people have in movies impacts their lives in a way. Movies don’t always have to be viewed in the movie theaters, such as the interest at home.
Many people are visual people meaning a person may enjoy watching the movie of a particular theme, instead of having to read a long drawn out novel, in which may not interest them at all when having to read it physically. Another reason for this is because of their laziness within an individual. In a sense movies are enjoyable, don’t get me wrong, movies are an excellent choice for entertainment, but in a way this Early Evolution of Technology being depicted through movies is making it easier for an individual to be even lazier. The only thing one would have to do is push one button, and the job is complete.
Even now, presently in the year 2010, popular movies are becoming even more interesting to the audience, and people are grasping every aspect of the movies they choose to watch.

Chapter 6 Cable & Its Advances

Ciara Adams
Chapter6
Cable :A Wired Versus Wireless World
At one point and time there was no such thing as cable.I believe there was only maybe five major stations that were viewed before cable came into play. Most of the T.V stations centered around daily, and national news.Television has undergone a wired vs. Wireless world, as time has progressed.

In 1940’s cable T.V was the “big advance” for many Americans. In the 1940’s the first cable systems were called CATV, another name for this system is Community antenna televison. In time HBO,and  TBS severed as satellite channels. The whole idea of satellite T.V came from a man by the name of Arthur Clarke.Clarke invisioned “a nework of communication satellites”.After the advance of satellite television, came Tekstar, the first communication satellite that relays telephone and televison signals in 1960.Now, in th year 2010.......If someone were to ask you to make a list of the your Top five networks and Top five channels to watch, for some it may be quiet difficult jugding from the wide variety of  television stations and networks our country has.It may be even virtually impossible for many more because some are trained into viewing T.V on the daily basis. The Wireless World along with satellite technology has changed the television industry for the better. Our technological world always seems to advance  in ways that benefit our society. There always seems as though there can bee a quicker, easier, and safer way to go about changing the way things previously were in our past routines.
The ficanial factor of the on going process of “ The Wireless World”, is that even when one may think to themselves  “I don’t think I can afford cable”,there seems to be a price range, or cable package to were each citizen has an equal opportunity to viewing the same shows as an individual who has a more wider selection to choose from. Our advances may change but, equal opportunity will always remind the same.

Chapter 5 T.V & The Power of Visual Culture

Ciara Adams
CHAPTER 5
T.V. & THE POWER OF VISUAL CULTURE
When comparing the internet to T.V its “food for thought” in a sense.Digtial Technology also changes “How we watch T.V.”Our future of television is important to those in the U.S, who are strong viewers of T.V. Telelvision is also the main storytelling medium of our time.
Television can be an assest to the society as well as expressing negative effects to its viewers. When it comes to children, usually kids between the ages 2-13, mimic what is seen on T.V is
usually the negative, and violent behavior such as wrestling, extreme fights, or even a slap to the face, can be threathing to some viewers, and even more a henderence to the learning process for children. As a child grows older, it is then, that they have atleast maturaed to the point to understant  the difference between what can be done on T.V but not done in school, or at home.
As a college student I am able to utilize the modern technology of either a desktop computer or laptop and can make the decision of either watching  a channel over the internet, or from thr privacy of my livingroom, But, now the idea in question is Can or will the internet replace Television? And What will become of the T.V.vs. Computers, or laptop in thr next 10-30 years?
Personally I am not too much of an Television viewer.I don’t have cable in my home at the moment and I do realize how important  and how much of an issue these questions will become over the years.I believe movie theathres will eventually go out of bissness.I feel American citizens will make their livingrooms into their own personal movie theathre.I also think T.V will be touchscreen, and also have a webcam attached to the outer screen of the T.V.I also think people will be able to use their T.V as a way to call family members and friends, while at the same time visually see the person your talking to.Another one of my visions is the company Apple just might  be a cable provider. There may not  be censorship anymore.Through new advances to our “media world” over the years theres no telling what may be instored for the citizens of America. As menetioned earler this subject matter is defiantly food for thought.

Chapter 4 Radio & Origins of Broadcasting

Ciara Adams

Chapter 4
Radio & Origins of Broadcasting

The public Intrest, truly matters in our society, and also in the “media world.”The radio was and still is a constant in the daily lives of many citizens in America.Radio is in a way the begining of how communicational media begun to spread.I feel radio will be around for a while, since there have been so many other new advances within our “techinlogical relm”, and radio still stands today. It is appiled in the automobiles we drive, it is apllied in our homes, through being played over the radio from stero players, sd players, mp3 players, and even the internet.Radio is still up rising along with newer furture inventions. The radio  is “staying the pace” in a sense.
There are many people, who have to listen to the radio each day before they begin their daily rountine scheldules.Personally I don’t enjoy listening to the radio, when there is mostly talk.I’m not a fan  to listening to the same voice over the radio for 15- 20 mins non-stop.For me, in the morning hours radio isn’t being listened to.Having direct advertising over the radio isn’t pleasing to all people of America.
There can be positive and negitive assests to radio, if you prefer a certain genre of music you can go to, a particular radio station and hear only what you want to.The listener is in control or has the power to  listen to there favorite radio station. What’s really unique about radio stations is that an ordinary citizen can request a particular song and if the radio station empolyee recieves the call then the listeners song choice will be played.Another great oppprtunity with radio  stations is that, some radio stations have a ticket giveaway process, that involves a radio listener of their particular station  to  call in if they know the Top seven or five songs for the day or the hour depending on the radio station your listening to, and if your the correct listener then you will win the ticket giveaway. These ticket prizes consist of either a concert tickets of maybe a popular band or recording artist, or just community events in the regionor city of the station.
As a strong listener to the radio, I take advantage of the different opportunities the radio stations set forth on the weekly basis.Iam glad to bbe able to select for the “pool” I should say of stations.Inthe state of NewYorkm there is a widespread, diversity among radio stations and the music genere being set forth to the listeners ears.

Chapter 3 Sound Recording& Popular Music

Ciara Adams

Chapter3 Sound Recording & Popular Music

There are many lovers of music in our society. For some music plays a significant role in thr lives of many Americans young and old.Within the history  of American sound recording came many different genres of music from pop music, rock music, Folk , Psychedelic, punk, hiphop, and R&B.According To Robbie Robertson of  The Band “Music should never be harmless.Personally I agree, but many may disagree.Sometimes song artisst intend on getting a particular message across and , some artists wants their message to get sent out to its listeners. But, because they want to sway their listerners towards maybe rebels which can be bad, it may have a negative effects on listeners as well, which may cause the influence off drug and alchol. There may even be dangerous drug use among band memebers  of particular musical bands.
As a listener of music and being  that I am open minded with all genres of music, I have observed that there are many sterotypes within the music business.I also feel as though their are postive sides to why artist may choose to write, or sing a particular song. Some postive reasons why artist may compose a certain song type may be because, the artist can use their song as a way of speaking out.It can also be a New change, or way of release, or escape. The music they produce, can be pleasurable or entertaining. It also gives youth in our present society a “voice”.Foe example when poverty was very prominat in the city of NewYork, the artist Grabdmaster Flash, rapped a song “Don’t Push Me”.This song to my understanding was written to get the message of the growing provtery levels, and community environments of those who were suffering, nad unable to make a healthly  life fo rthemselves in NYC.When is video/song was compared to a more present day rapper Jay-Z, his version of the“American Dream”, was displayed on the music video “NewYork. Ft. Alicia Keys” showed its auidence that it is possible to rise above proverty levels and make use to talents within.Once those talents are found within they can be ulitlzed  and then brought out unto the public eyes, and heard through music to entertain the public’s interest. It may  not reach all individuals, but someone is sure to be touched by hte words spoken from artist with unique messages.
A song, is basically telling a story.Whatever its writer wants to embark on is their particular choice. The business deal along with sound recording different types of music can be a learning experience for anyone who is new to the  business aspect of the “ music world”.Personally I feel if your music is good enough for atleast one indivdual in the world, then “go for it”.

Chapter 2 The Internet and Its Importance

Within our internet structure presently, its all about “big business”.As we all know our braodband connections are wonderful technolgical tools that can be used daily.Compared to dial up, broadband is much more efficent and expendient. Our broadband systems connects users to the web. Now, this web, I speak of is heavily depended on and upon millions, and trillions of individuals like you and I.

Let’s take a moment and realize how important our internet connection is to each and every individual who relies upon it.If the internet did not exist, not only you personally, but how would this change the world, or even history at that? We must consider our political awareness. How would people know what’s going on in the World, if they were use to being internet “additcs”? I can remember being in a computer class in grammer school, and the computer instructor was informing us to “click, here, or there”,in doing so I was learning how to use the computer and at the same time do math practice problems. Before learning in school about computers, I was one of the “have nots” citizens of America. My family didn’t own a computer, so the only time I seen one was in school. So I began to take advange of the oppprtunity I had been given, and I learned of its greatness.Today I am able to be open minded and opinionated about how the computers and the internet has its good assest, and negative assests.Personally I belive each and every individual throughout the whole world should deserve a chance at working hands on with computers and learn of the internet, so they too can gain knowelgde and later use it to the best there abilites.

Our e-mail for example is the “most popular use of the Internet”.My guess is a lot of reading of newspapers, and writing of important documentation would occur. If you need information  sent out then the poatal service will be the rite way to go about handleing your duties.Fax machines will be used heavily, therefore, we will become customed to using tons, and tons of paper. Will that effect our environment?,Our country?Yes!!! What would “we Americans do?”.There can always be ways to go around things that are no longer in existance any more. This would merely be an act of change. This could be a “cultural media change”.It’s all up to those who are willing to make sacfrices and accept e-mails being no longer apart of our “social media”.

Chapter 1 -Review "Electronic and Digital Eras"

In our fast paced driven society, we are given the oppportunity to learn and be exposed to "the World of Digital Media".Each individual throughtout the world utilizes different type of Media devices on the daily bases. We are living in a Mass Media Era.I find it highly important to stay the pace of our up and coming digital avenues to come.

Throughout our country's history it has been shown that new advances has arose over past eras. For example, when the telagragph was invented it gave birth to one of the first communications that is used or atleast can be used  not only in America, but in other countries throughout the world.I began to question the third world countries, and how there are many countries who haven't advanced much at all.My question is what would it take for these countries to be on the same level as the United States or the other first world countries? At this point presently, is it even possible for  the third world countries to even come close to advancing as U.S?

As a college student, I personally understand the signficence in being a well-rounded, progressive, and knowelgdeable media reader, viewer, and listener.Though sometimes we all may take a grasp to our own personal forms of media, being able to keep the balance of the media in general is an highly important asset to have.
